EMDR is different than regular talk therapy
I’ve helped hundreds of clients gain powerful relief with EMDR. Many clients come to EMDR therapy after years of talk therapy, still struggling with certain symptoms, and are delighted to discover how much relief they experience from EMDR therapy.
EMDR therapy goes to the root and permanently desensitizes painful memories so that clients no longer need to exert effort to cope with the difficult feelings they were once experiencing.
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from trauma, anxiety and painful life experiences—often more quickly and deeply than traditional talk therapy.
Many clients find EMDR after years of talk therapy that helped them gain insight, but wasn’t enough to give them true and lasting relief.
When we’ve been through difficult experiences, memories can get stored in distressing, fragmented ways that keep them stuck. Instead of just talking about what happened, EMDR works with your brain’s natural ability to process and heal from distress. It uses bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds) while you gently focus on a memory or feeling. This helps your nervous system “unstick” and reprocess what’s been stored in distressing, fragmented ways.
EMDR helps remove the blockages that have kept you stuck.
The memories don’t disappear, but they lose their emotional charge. They become just something that happened-not something that continues to cause you distress.
You don’t need to stay stuck. Let’s talk and see if EMDR therapy is right for you.
What does an EMDR session look like?
After learning more about the client, their history, what is bringing them to therapy, and preparing them for processing, we use a structured protocol that asks the client about the body sensation, emotions, and asks them to rate how upsetting the memory feels from 0-10.
Clients then think about the memory while using some kind of bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping or sound).
By the end of processing, which is often 1 session, and sometimes more, most client’s distress is significantly lower. When a memory is processed, you can still remember it, but it no longer has a traumatic charge.
